Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Illuminator’s
This year we mark the 110th anniversary of the founding of our beloved Mayr Yegeghetsi. The inscription over the apse of our Holy Altar reads: “Թագաւոր երկնաւոր, զեկեղեցի քո անշարժ պահեա,” which translates to: “Heavenly King, preserve your Church unshaken.” Those words are not only a central plea of our Christian faith, but also our prayer, year in and year out, that God keep our Mayr Yegeghetsi unshaken and on solid ground.
As we enter our 111th year of faith, service, and tradition and celebrate the 110 years that came before, we find our Mayr Yegeghetsi stronger than it has been in living memory.
St. Illuminator’s is a Mayr Yegeghetsi in a deeper sense than just being the Cathedral and episcopal seat of our beloved Prelate, H. E. Archbishop Anoushavan. As America’s Ellis Island Church, we are not just a parish church or even a Metropolitan church, but a Cosmopolitan church with a historic reach beyond Manhattan and New York City, to the region, to the Nation, to the World.
That we continue to maintain an institution with that kind of reach is a testament to our ministry under the tireless and selfless guidance of our pastor and shepherd, Rev. Fr. Mesrob Lakissian, the 20th anniversary of whose ordination we also celebrate in this year of milestones. It is the honor and privilege of this Board to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Der Mesrob and support him with brotherly love. It is our work together that has kept our Mayr Yegeghetsi not only strong, but the relevant and vital Armenian Christian institution it is, a Church that draws back through its doors the descendants of the generations who passed through those same doors when they embarked on their American journeys, along with the many who come to us the first time once they learn about our ministry.
St. Illuminator’s has traveled a long road that has known hardship and renewal. Today, we stand again in the light. There is nothing inevitable about that. It is Providence smiling upon the hard work we do to sustain our ministry.
His Holiness Aram I proclaimed 2025 the “Year of the Revitalization of Traditions.” Throughout history, the Armenian Church has been the author, midwife, and vessel of our Armenian Christian and cultural identity divine and secular. Just as we have a sacred Armenian Christian tradition, we also have an Armenian cultural tradition that we hold sacred. We are called as Armenians and duty-bound to honor both. For eleven decades, St. Illuminator’s has played an uncommonly important role in carrying out that sacred obligation. And we continue to honor our long and distinguished history of serving as a place to preserve, renew, and honor our Armenian Christian and cultural heritage.
We stand on the shoulders of the giants who went before us and built and sustained this humble yet magnificent house of the Lord. We now walk with humility into the future praying that we are worthy of their example.
As we continue to write the story of our vital, precious, and historic Mayr Yegeghetsi, we ask God’s blessing and for your continuing fellowship, participation, devotion, and support.

Տարիներ առաջ, մեծանուն գրող Արամ Հայկազ առիթով մը «Քսանեօթը» խորագրով յօդուած մը ստորագրած էր եւ համով-հոտով իր տպաւորութիւնները յայտնած՝ Նիւ Եորքի Սուրբ Լուսաւորիչ Մայր Եկեղեցւոյ մասին: Ու կ՚աւելցնէր. «Փառքի ու սուգի ի՜նչ օրեր ու տօնախմբութիւններ չեն տեսած այս պարզուկ եկեղեցիին կամարները… Ի՜նչ խանդավառ ճառեր ու խորախորհուրդ քարոզներ խօսուած են իր դասէն ու խորանէն: Իր ճակատագիրը, սեւ կամ պայծառ համանման եղած է իր ժողովուրդի ճակատագրին հետ: Ան տեսած է մահ, ծնունդ, արցունք, ծիծաղ, անէծք ու օրհնութիւն… Մէկ խօսքով՝ հայ ժողովուրդի ապրումներուն ու օրերուն հետ նոյնացած են իր ապրումներն ու օրերը»:
Արդարեւ, այդպէս է եղած ամբողջ 110-ամեայ պատմութիւնը, նոր աշխարհի ամենահին եկեղեցիներէն մէկուն՝ Սուրբ Լուսաւորիչ Մայր Եկեղեցւոյ:
110-ամեայ մեր եկեղեցին իսկապէս մայր եղաւ բազմաթիւ եկեղեցիներու, հարազատ մայրութիւն ըրաւ հազարաւոր հայերու, որոնք Հայոց Ցեղասպանութենէն եւ Համաշխարհային Երկրորդ Պատերազմէն ետք ոտք դրին օրհնեալ այս երկիրը: Դարձաւ ամերիկահայոց Էլիս Այլընտը: Հիւրընկալեց ԱՆՉԱ-ի միջոցաւ Նիւ Եորք հասած հազարաւոր գաղթականներ: Վերջին 20 տարիներուն մայրական նուիրումը, սէրն ու գուրգուրանքը բաշխեց Հայաստանի, Արցախի եւ Միջին Արեւելքի երկիրներու մեր կարիքաւոր զաւակներուն: Մօր մը բծախնդրութեամբ սատարեց քրիստոնէական, հոգեւոր եւ ազգային արժէքներու, կրօնի, հայ դպրոցի, հայ լեզուի եւ պատմութեան տարածման եւ պահպանման:
Որպէս հոգեւոր հովիւ, կ՚ուզեմ անցեալը յիշել, կ՚ուզեմ այս Սուրբ եկեղեցւոյ հոգեւոր, ազգային, մշակութային եւ բարեսիրական հարուստ պատմութեան 110-ամեայ էջերը թերթատել եւ յիշել ու յարգել բոլոր անոնք, որոնք իբրեւ առաջնորդ, հոգեւոր հովիւ, հոգաբարձու, երեսփոխան, Սբ. Խորանի ծառայող, դպրաց դասու անդամ, տիկնանց միութեան անդամ, ուսուցիչ-ուսուցչուհի, բարերար եւ այլապէս եկան, ծառայեցին ու անցան, եւ անոնք, որոնք տակաւին նոյն աշխուժութեամբ եւ նուիրումով կը շարունակեն ծառայել:
Յոբելինական այս պատմական հանգրուանին մեր աշխատանքի դաշտերը աւելի եւս ընդարձակելու մարտահրաւէրին դիմաց կը գտնուինք: Վերանորոգ հաւատքով պիտի շարունակենք մեր ծառայութիւնն ու առաքելութիւնը ի սպաս մեր հաւատաւոր ժողովուրդին:
Աղօթքս ու մաղթանքս է, որ Աստուած Մայր Եկեղեցին պահէ անսասան, իսկ Իր անուան հաւատացողները՝ խաղաղութեան մէջ:
On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the founding and service of St. Illuminator’s Cathedral, I extend my heartfelt greetings to you all.
Years ago, the great writer Aram Haigaz wrote an article entitled “Twenty-Seven” in which he expressed his impressions of St. Illuminator’s Cathedral in New York City: “What days and celebrations of glory and grief haven’t the walls of this simple Church seen . . . What passionate speeches and profound sermons have been delivered from her Chancel and Altar. Her fate, dark and bright, has been one and the same as the fate of her people. She has been witness to death, birth, tears, laughter, ill fortune and blessing . . . In a word, her life and times have been the life and times of the Armenian people.”
That, indeed, has been true of the entire 110-year history of one of the oldest Armenian churches in America, our St. Illuminator’s Cathedral, which, for most of her history, has served as and worn the sublime title of Mayr Yegeghetsi, Mother Church.
During her 110 years, St. Illuminator’s has showed authentic motherhood to countless thousands of Armenians who set foot in this blessed country after the Armenian Genocide and the Second World War. She became an Ellis Island for Armenian Americans. She hosted thousands of immigrants arriving in New York through the work of ANCHA. In so doing, she truly earned her title of Mayr Yegeghetsi, becoming an Armenian Christian spiritual and cultural mother not just to her children but also to other Armenian churches that were founded by the generations who first entered America through her doors, before going forth elsewhere throughout this land to build their Armenian American dream. For the past 20 years, she has shared her maternal devotion, love, and care with our needy children in Armenia, Artsakh, and the Middle East. And for well more than a century, with a mother’s dedication, she has supported the preservation of Armenian Christian, spiritual, and cultural, and national values, and above all the Armenian language, through her Sunday and Armenian schools.
On the occasion of this historic anniversary, as pastor of St. Illuminator’s Cathedral, I turn thoughtfully and reverently through the pages of 110 years of Mayr Yegeghetsi’s rich spiritual, cultural, charitable, and social history to honor, remember, and pay my respects to all who throughout her history have served, as prelates, pastors, priests, trustees, delegates, altar servers, choir and ladies guild members, teachers, benefactors, and in so many other capacities, and to all who continue to serve with the same energy and dedication as the generations who came before and built the institution we now have the privilege and duty to sustain and pass on to the generations who will follow.
With renewed faith, we look ahead from our 110 years to continue serving our faithful people and challenging ourselves to further expand the scope of our ministry and mission.
It is my prayer and wish that God will keep our Mayr Yegeghetsi unshakable, and all who believe in His name in peace.
